Discover Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Accept your reality and eliminate detrimental patterns

What is DBT?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is similar to CBT – they are both cognitive therapies that are based on identifying and changing/removing harmful thought patterns and behaviours. With DBT, we concentrate on balancing acceptance and change. I will help you understand and accept your current situation (things you can’t change), and then work on changing the things that you actually can change.

DBT therapy services

DBT involves improving skills in four areas:

Emotion regulation
We will work on regulating your emotions so they don’t control your life.

Mindfulness

It helps you live in the present and accept your circumstances

Distress tolerance

You will learn how to deal with stressful situations in a healthy way.

Interpersonal effectiveness
Improve your communication, self-confidence and relationships.

We will work on these four areas to help you handle stressful situations and emotions in a more effective way, as well as improve your relationships with others.

I’m an experienced DBT counsellor in Ontario

Denise Smith RSW

I have over 18 years of professional experience and over the years, I have helped many clients in Ontario manage their emotions, reduce harmful behaviours, and improve their relationships, using different therapeutic approaches including DBT.

My clients value DBT because, just like CBT, this therapy approach is very effective and offers relatively quick results that leave them feeling like they have control over their emotions and behaviours.  If you decide to work with me using this approach, you will gain the tools necessary to navigate your life's challenges with resilience and confidence.
